How an AI-powered SimCity can help foster just, thriving, & resilient places

We’re so excited to share the exciting news that State of Place was chosen as one of 21 finalists in TechConnect’s Readiness Innovation Challenge! We will be presenting at the joint TechConnect and Smart Cities Connect conference in DC on September 29th!

The Readiness Innovation Challenge is one of six innovation challenges being hosted at TechConnect. It seeks to identify transformative ways to leverage the power of AI and tech to ensure that communities are equipped to tackle the myriad challenges they’re already facing, including climate change, health disparities, economic hardships, and overall spatial inequities.

Of course, we’re excited to share how we’ve helped dozens of citymakers use predictive analytics and AI to create more just, thriving communities, more effectively, cost-efficiently, and inclusively. In particular, we’ll be showcasing how State of Place helps cities overcome two key, related challenges: 1) how best to equitably prioritize limited resources in ways that maximize quality of life and 2) how best to co-create solutions and communicate their value in ways that help build trust, drive consensus, and secure approvals and funding for critical community-scale infrastructure investments. We’ll explain how State of Place:

  • Collects data on over 125 micro-scale, built environment features (e.g., sidewalks, curb cuts, bike lanes, parks, and more) from digital, street-level images

  • Aggregates, analyzes, and displays this data in ways that help citymakers quantitatively identify and target at-risk, divested communities suffering from spatial inequities

  • Translates built environment and quality of life data into actionable, evidence-based urban design recommendations and investment-read project ideas most likely to increase social, health, environmental, and economic value

  • Allows cities to use its Sim-City like modeling tool to test how those recommendations would (quantitatively) improve the quality of their everyday infrastructure and co-create impactful projects

  • Quantifies the real-life impact of the project scenarios - co-created with our Sim-City like modeling tool - by estimating how those solutions improve outcomes like retail and tax revenues, vehicle collision rates, asthma, heat waves, GHGs, public safety and more and calculates their return on investment (ROI).
